Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Warns of Potential Layoffs.

Jun. 25--PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The Department of Environmental Management might have to lay off 11 workers if the General Assembly goes forward with a plan to transfer the state's wastewater permitting and monitoring program back to the federal government, director Jan Reitsma said this week.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency delegated the program to the state two decades ago. Rhode Island is now one of 44 states with such authority, along with Maine, Vermont and Connecticut.
"This is one of the key programs that has improved water ...uality on our major rivers and bay," DEM Associate Director Frederick Vincent said yesterday.
