Jun. 25--Davis-based bio-technology company AgraQuest was named a winner of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge award Tuesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for developing a fungicide that is not toxic to humans, animals or the environment.

The company's fungicide Serenade controls a broad spectrum of plant diseases but doesn't kill beneficial insects and can be used up to the day of harvest, according to the company.

The awards recognize companies and people who've discovered innovative ways to significantly reduce pollution.

Five winners were picked by an independent panel of experts convened by the American Chemical Society.
