Recent Tests Underscore Difficult Tasks Ahead for NASA.

Jul. 9--The dramatic test showing that a chunk of foam could punch a 16-inch-square hole into the leading edge of a space-shuttle wing underscores the difficulties facing NASA before the shuttle can return to space.

While the agency tries to comply with a recommendation by the Columbia Accident Investigation Board that astronauts be able to fix and repair damage to a shuttle's thermal armor while in orbit, Monday's test results highlight the engineering issues that could threaten NASA's hopes to launch sometime next spring.
