Far from Dead, Pasadena, Calif.-Based Idealab Continues to Build for Future.

Jul. 13--Since he was a 12-year-old boy growing up in Encino, Bill Gross has dreamed of improving the world through technology.

When he was 15, Gross set up his own company to create solar-powered devices. At age 22, he graduated from Caltech with a degree in mechanical engineering. At 24, he started his own software company.

At 26, Gross sold GNP, named for the economic term gross national product, to software giant Lotus.

His altruism is admirable. But there was a time when Idealab was only associated with growth of the bottom line.

That was 1985.
