Cutting Costs Means Tough Decisions Still Ahead for American Airlines.

Jul. 2--American Airlines Inc. will soon unveil a series of tough decisions that will probably include cutting flights and consolidating aircraft maintenance bases and telephone reservations centers.

The structural changes are part of American's attempt to avoid bankruptcy and to cut $4 billion a year in costs. In April, the airline received $1.8 billion in givebacks from its employees.

On Tuesday, American also reported lower traffic figures for June compared with last year, suggesting its recovery remains slow.

More changes at American have been widely anticipated. But its announcement Tuesday was light on detail.
