AT&T Begins Offering Local Telephone Service in Wisconsin.

Jul. 11--AT&T, a heavy hitter in the telephone industry, entered the local fray Thursday in a move expected to bring lower prices and new services.

AT&T's $50 flat rate for unlimited local and long distance calling is sure to spark fierce competition with MCI and the state's dominant telephone company, SBC Wisconsin. Awaiting regulatory approval, SBC is poised to offer its own flat rate plan by the end of the year.

"All of a sudden you have multiple big-name providers competing for the same customer," said Jeff Kagan, a telecommunications industry analyst based in Atlanta. "It turns up the heat on competition, on customer care and innovative pricing."...
