Cell-Phone Customers Now Can Take Number with Them to New Carrier.

Jul. 14--If you've stuck with a crummy cell phone plan just to hang onto your phone number, sacrifice no more.

Soon cell phones will be even more portable because you'll be able to take your number with you when you change carriers.

The Federal Communications Commission set Nov. 24 as the deadline for phone companies to comply with its order on wireless local number portability.

Proponents of the wireless portability argue that consumers should benefit by being able to keep their numbers when they jump to another company for a better deal.

Customers in other countries have the portability option.
