Microsoft Is Nipping at Oracle's Heels in Business Software Market.

Jul. 21--SEATTLE--Amid the public jousting in Oracle's hostile takeover bid for business-software maker PeopleSoft, the spoiler behind the scenes is actually Microsoft.
Microsoft holds only a tiny percentage of the market for business applications software, but its influence looms large. The Redmond, Wash., software giant has vast resources and a demonstrated ability to come from behind and eventually dominate key technology markets.
Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison has said he wants to buy PeopleSoft not only to bolster his applications business against market leader SAP, but also against Microsoft, which he sees as a growing threat.
