Thailand Slashes Domestic Travel Subsidy, Turns Focus to Conventions Market.

Jul. 23--The government has sharply cut the budget of a proposed fund to help revive the Sars-hit tourism industry by sponsoring domestic travel for local administrative agency officials, teachers and university students.

The cabinet, under a directive from Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, yesterday approved a budget of 82 million baht against 400 million baht originally proposed in May.

Sonthaya Khunpluem, the minister of tourism and sports, said that Mr Thaksin felt 82 million baht was enough money for the programme.
