House of Representatives Opposes Media Consolidation Rules Favored by FCC.

Jul. 24--WASHINGTON--The House voted Wednesday to block a new rule by the Federal Communications Commission that would allow major broadcasters to expand their holdings in local television stations to reach nearly half of the nation's viewers.

The bipartisan action -- part of a broad appropriations bill for several large agencies -- was a big blow to the media ownership rules adopted June 2 by the FCC and endorsed by the Bush administration.

It also reflected strong concern -- among lawmakers and advocacy groups on the right and the left -- that the new FCC rules would allow too much consolidation among media companies.
