Jul. 24--CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.--Along the space-savvy heart of Florida's east-central coast, there are launches and there are launches.

For the space shuttle, people gather by the thousands on beaches, in parks and along the banks of the Indian River for a few seconds of spectacle, just as they had done years before for NASA's fabled moon shots. For anything less, the gathering is more like a family reunion.
