Japan Tobacco Inc. to End Sales of Two Cigarette Brands in European Union.

Jul. 25--TOKYO--Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) will terminate sales of its popular Mild Seven and Mild Seven Light brands in the European Union (EU) market in line with the September enforcement of an EU directive banning the use of words like "mild" for cigarette brands, company officials said Friday.

JT has already informed local tobacco dealers of its plan not to ship the two brands anymore, the officials said.

JT began sales of Mild Seven in June 2001 in EU countries like Italy, France and the Netherlands. The brand's annual sales in the EU total about 100 million cigarettes, compared with 25 billion in Japan.
