Average Home Price in Massachusetts Rises Above $400,000 for First Time.

Jul. 26--Helped by low mortgage rates, the average selling price of a detached single-family home in the Bay State blew past the $400,000 threshold for the first time, shattering the previous ceiling by roughly $40,000, the Massachusetts Association of Realtors said yesterday.

But the group cautioned against making too much of the figures. A disproportionate number of expensive homes were sold in June, many of them on Cape Cod, and that skewed the results upward.

"I think it's an aberration," said Peter Casey, president of the realtors group.

Still, with higher unemployment rates, more houses on the market, and the number of sales declining for six months...
