Jul. 26--UnumProvident Corp. says sales were softer than desired but business held up the past year despite a flurry of negative publicity, a drop in investor confidence and the firing of its chief executive.

"The board made clear it was endorsing the strategy and direction and it was more investor confidence and execution of strategy why it made a change at the top," said Tom White, vice president of investor relations for the Chattanooga-based disability insurer.
