New Study Provides View of Widespread Pain of Nation's Unemployment.

Jul. 30--Nearly one in five American workers have been laid off in the past three years, and many had little or no safety net after they were let go, according to a study released Monday by workplace experts at Rutgers University.

Many of those unemployed workers received little or no advance warning, severance or career counseling, the report said. While many have found new jobs, some now earn less. Some remain unemployed.

The study, "The Disposable Worker: Living in a Job-Loss Economy," is a "moving picture" of the nation's economic problems, as opposed to the monthly snapshots provided through the government's unemployment data, Rutgers...
