Court Deals Tire-Pressure Monitors a Setback.

Aug. 14--CHICAGO--A federal re...uirement for tire-pressure monitors set to start Nov. 1 has been postponed by a U.S. Appeals Court decision, but automakers plan to continue offering the devices to consumers.

In a decision last week, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York ordered the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to rewrite its regulations to re...uire so-called direct tire-pressure monitors (or TPMs) that measure inflation levels at individual wheels.

At the urging of the Bush Administration, NHTSA last year issued rules allowing automakers to use indirect TPMs that are cheaper and rely on anti-lock brake systems to detect under-inflation....
