Hackensack, N.J.-Area Hospitals Cope with Blackout Using Backup Power.

Aug. 15--One patient had been anesthetized for surgery when it was canceled. Others had their operations suddenly postponed until electricity could be restored.

Hospital officials sent staff to buy battery-powered fans, deployed food carts with ice for patients and visitors, and monitored emergency generators after the power crashed on Thursday afternoon.

"The biggest problem is the heat situation," said Daniel Kane, president of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, as temperatures rose without air conditioning in his office. His staff members bought every fan they could find at ShopRite, he said.
