EDS' Entry into 'Utility Computing' Spurs New Level of Competition.

Aug. 21--Electronic Data Systems Corp. unveiled a technology system Wednesday designed to give businesses greater control over what software they choose.

The Web-based product is part of a trend in the computer services industry to make buying software, data storage and processing power more utility-like. Computer services firms say companies should be able to buy more software or storage when they need it, and less when they don't.

That idea, called "utility computing," has become the industry's biggest frontier, with competitors including International Business Machines Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Plano-based EDS vying to be pioneers.
