Smaller Regional Jets Take Over South Carolina Runways.

Aug. 31--Regional jets have become the workhorse of commercial air travel in South Carolina.

The 50-passenger jets are ...uickly replacing turboprops and large jets as the favored plane for hauling passengers on short hops to smaller airports.

Among them is the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, where regional jets handle three-fourths of daily flights. Four years ago, it was about a third.

The airline industry loves regional jets, buying them to replace turboprops and their aging jet fleet. The smaller jets are favored because they:

-- Fly faster and farther than turboprops.

-- Are cheaper to fly -- and easier to fill -- than other...
