Future Space-Shuttle Crews to Inspect Ship for Damage after Launch.

Aug. 4--CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Future space-shuttle crews will inspect their ship for damage on the day after launch with a 58-foot boom attached to the orbiter's robot arm, according to a plan approved by NASA managers last week.

A July 31 internal NASA document obtained by the Orlando Sentinel details the options for surveying the shuttle's thermal-protection system in orbit and recommends testing possible repair techni...ues for the ship's protective heat tiles on the next mission.
