Spanish-Language Media Merger Said to Have Key Regulatory Approval.

Aug. 7--The deal could lead to a dominant media titan in Spanish.

The Federal Communications Commission's GOP majority has reportedly given initial approval to a controversial $2.8 billion merger between Univision Communications and Hispanic Broadcasting Co., a deal that creates a media behemoth dominating Spanish-language television, radio and entertainment outlets.

The agency's three Republican commissioners privately cast votes last week in favor of the deal, unifying the giants of Spanish-language television and radio, according to Bloomberg News, citing four officials within the FCC. The Republicans' support for the deal has been widely expected.
