NASA Picks Team to Build Probe to Seek Water on Mars in 2007.

Aug. 6--WASHINGTON--NASA announced Monday its choice for a robotic spacecraft that will head for Mars in 2007 to search for water in the northern latitudes of the Red Planet.

Phoenix, a partnership among scientists at the University of Arizona, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lockheed Martin and the Canadian Space Agency, won out over three other proposals. The mission is the first in the Mars Scout program, envisioned as a series of smaller missions -- this one less than $325 million -- to complement more expensive and ambitious probes.
