Aug. 8--The computer industry has realized that most customers no longer want better "speeds and feeds" -- faster processors and more memory.

Most software applications run fine on processors that debuted three years ago, so many users don't feel the need to spend money every year or two to upgrade to something faster.

Fair enough. But booting up a lightning-fast, state-of-the-art processor is still like stomping on the gas pedal of a Ferrari. The speed may not be necessary, but it sure feels good.

The Inspiron 5150, Dell Inc.'s muscle car for the power user, clocks in with a 3.06-gigahertz Pentium 4 processor, the fastest in a Dell laptop....
