Recognition Sought for Birthplace of the Auto Industry.

Sep. 1--Historian Ken Shepherd stands in the shadow of Building No. 2 of the Anderson Electric Car Co. on Clay in Detroit. Shepherd and fellow historian Richard Sucre are researching the area they say should be considered the birthplace of the auto industry.

Their quest was simple but daunting: comb the cradle of the automobile industry and re-create the story of its genesis. They knew exactly where to dig: the old industrial patch called Milwaukee Junction, just east of Detroit's New Center. It is a place full of lumbering old factories, overgrown railroad tracks, abandoned structures -- and an encouraging number of present-day inhabitants.
