Strong Sales Make Life A Picnic for Woolworths.

Sep. 11--Woolworths surged 14 percent as strong sales of paddling pools, picnic equipment and cold drinks helped it offset soggy chocolate sales this August. "We are certainly in calmer waters than we were this time last year," said chief executive Trevor Bish-Jones. Like-for-like sales in its High Street stores were up 2.5 percent in the second quarter, compared to a 0.4 percent fall in the first, and the "improving trend" is continuing.
The shares climbed 5 1/2 pence to 43 1/2 pence. The retailer said first-half pretax losses fell 21 percent to UKpound 36.4 million. Its profit comes through in the second half and Bish-Jones says "we are set up well for Christmas." The interim dividend was...
