Massachusetts Plans to Sue Contractor Bechtel over Big Dig Highway Project.

Sep. 17--For the first time in the 18-year history of the Big Dig, the state plans to sue Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff in what investigators say is the opening salvo in an effort to recover up to tens of millions of dollars in cost overruns.

In a letter to Bechtel last month, state lawyers demanded a cash refund from Bechtel for mistakes they said Bechtel made on one portion of the $14.6 billion project, state officials said yesterday. The letter said the state was prepared to go to court to back up its claims against the project's private-sector managers.
