Sep. 18--If the 2004 Subaru Baja Turbo were a multiple-choice question, the answer would be "none of the above."

As any student knows, sometimes that's the right answer. The Baja is a compact whazzat, the kind of car Dr. Seuss might have imagined.

Strictly speaking, the Baja is a compact four-door pickup, but Subaru is not a brand about which to be strict. The small automaker has survived by playing fast and loose with automotive definitions, creating new market niches and filling them with unusual vehicles.
