Sparks Fly over Armed Services Committee Chair's 'Buy American' Efforts.

Sep. 20--WASHINGTON--In his first year as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Duncan Hunter has stirred up a storm in the Pentagon and among military contractors over his efforts to make American weapons more American.

The San Diego Republican put tough language in the House defense authorization bill for 2004, hoping to bolster the United States industrial base, preserve manufacturing jobs and make sure U.S. military efforts are never held hostage to the whims of foreign suppliers.

Critics, though, say the new "Buy American" provisions would hurt American preparedness, hamper international cooperation, cost companies billions of dollars...
