FCC Approves Controversial Univision-Hispanic Broadcasting Merger.

Sep. 23--The Federal Communications Commission Monday approved the merger of Univision Communications Inc. and Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. along 3-to-2 party lines, after 15 months of fierce public debate.

The $3.1 billion deal creates the nation's largest Spanish-language media company -- by far. The combined companies will hold vast control of the audience and advertising dollars in the nation's Spanish-language broadcasting market at a time when Hispanic growth is outstripping that of the general population by a four-to-one margin.

The review was one of the longest running in FCC history.
