International Union Vows to Take Mining Giant Rio Tinto to Tasks.

Sep. 27--Union leaders representing eight nations concluded their biennial conference in Salt Lake City on Friday by vowing to rein in international mining conglomerate Rio Tinto on labor and environmental rights issues.

About 100 representatives of the Rio Tinto Global Union Network -- made up of 16 unions representing tens of thousands of workers -- pledged their solidarity in a campaign to "bring Rio Tinto to justice" on a worldwide scale.

The network, wrapping up two days of meetings co-hosted by the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions, committed to negotiating "an enforceable...
