Sep. 28--Polyurethane foam is everywhere in our homes -- in our furniture, our mattresses, under carpets, in recliners, couches and pillows, and it's a substance so flammable that it is sometimes referred to as solid gasoline. It is responsible for the deaths of 100 people in The Station fire, but it is also behind a larger, less publicized tragedy: the deaths of hundreds of people each year in home fires. Yet the government agency whose job it is to protect us, is in thrall to the manufacturers who set their own rules.
