Oct. 2--Now, here's a big surprise: When my list of "most fun to drive" 2004 models is compiled -- assuming I get around to compiling one -- who would have thought a Subaru wagon would be included?

The Subaru Forester was redesigned, and substantially improved, for 2003. Tall, wide and stubby, it is no one's idea of sexy, but it is attractive in a sturdy, able-to-bear-many-children way.

Essentially based on the Subaru Impreza, the standard Forester is powered by a 2.5-liter, 165-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Subaru's four-cylinder is a bit unusual: Most four-cylinders are "inline," with all four of the cylinders located one behind the other....
