Audit Report Scrutinizes Nevada Consumer Protection Bureau's Spending.

Oct. 3--State Consumer Advocate Tim Hay on Thursday responded to a critical audit of his operations, saying the state is getting more than its money's worth through lower utility rates and legal recoveries.

His office, the attorney general's Bureau of Consumer Protection, spent more money on consultants each year than all but 10 states in the nation, according to the Nevada Appeal, a Carson City newspaper that obtained a confidential draft of the audit report.

"I don't know where that statement came from," Hay said. But he added: "We also have some of the largest, if not the largest, rate increases in the nation pending."
