Lane County, Ore., Lawmaker to Give Up Seat, Take Government Job.

Oct. 7--SALEM, Ore. -- Veteran Lane County lawmaker Tony Corcoran is giving up his seat in the Legislature to accept a government job -- a move he says he was forced to make after his leadership role in reforming the public pension system put him at odds with the public employees union for which he worked.

The Cottage Grove Democrat's appointment Monday to the Employment Appeals Board appears to bring an abrupt end to an eight-year legislative career in which Corcoran earned a reputation as a feisty, relentless fighter for the labor movement.

It was Corcoran's role as the Senate's point man on overhauling the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System...
