University of Florida Trustees Pick Harley-Riding Dentist as President.

Oct. 8--GAINESVILLE, Fla.--Bernie Machen, a dentist by trade who rises at 5:30 a.m., rides a Harley-Davidson and doesn't care much for meetings, will be the next president of the University of Florida.

Machen, current president of the University of Utah, won unanimous support from UF's trustees to succeed outgoing UF President Charles Young at the state's largest university starting Jan. 5.

The job could be worth upward of $800,000 in salary and perks, easily the highest-paid job in the state's university system. Machen, 59, is expected to sign a contract that will keep him in Gainesville for five to eight years.
