New Chief Executive of Barclays Bank Makes Comeback.

Oct. 10--Behind his patrician manner, John Varley, Barclays' new chief executive, harbours a sharp governor--His wife Carolyn is a member of the Quaker Pease family, one of the bank's founding dynasties.

Until recently, few would have tipped Varley for the top job. But he has defied digs about nepotism and successive purges of the old guard.

Critics were disappointed not to get a "punchier" new boss. But Varley, 47, retorted: "I am quite capable of punching my own weight. I am too modest to point to some of the things I have done in the past few years as success stories."

Educated at Downside School, near Bath, and Oriel College, Oxford, he joined Barclays in the 1980s....
