Oct. 12--Sacramento-area residents soon could see more cable channels, faster Internet speeds and technological goodies such as high-definition television and digital recording as telecommunication companies battle it out over customers.

Eventually, experts and consumers also hope to see lower rates.

"Sacramento probably leads the state, if not the country, in the number of cable competitors," said Rich Esposto, executive director of the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Television Commission. "Sacramento has a burgeoning, or emerging, competition for video services that is unlike many other places."
