SBC Lets Ameritech Sell Long-Distance Service in Illinois, Ohio, Other States.

Oct. 15--The ugly duckling of SBC Communications Inc.'s brood will take a big step Wednesday toward what the company hopes is a metamorphosis into a swan.

Federal regulators are set to let the company's Midwestern division formerly known as Ameritech sell long-distance service in the last four of 13 states SBC operates local-phone networks in.

The approvals in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin, which come a month after Michigan, caps 4 tough years for the five-state division.
