Leaders Brace for Fight to Keep Groton, Conn., Submarine Facility Open.

Oct. 16--With the Pentagon preparing for a big round of base closings in 2005, southeastern Connecticut is already on alert.

The Navy submarine base in Groton has been targeted before, and officials want to make sure it doesn't happen again. They're organized and staying on top of the process, said John C. Markowicz, chairman of the Sub Base Realignment Coalition.

Losing the base and about 10,000 jobs -- both sailors and civilians -- would be devastating to the region. Markowicz said the area has paid its dues with earlier shifts of Navy facilities out of Connecticut and the downsizing of the Electric Boat shipyard.
