Tycoon's Interest in EMI Sparks Heavy Buying.

Oct. 16--Dutch media tycoon John de Mol turned the volume up at EMI. News that he has bought a 3.72 percent stake in the music giant sparked heavy buying and the close was 10 pence higher at 175 1/2 pence on turnover of 22 million. The billionaire who created the Big Brother TV series has already built up a portfolio of shares in about 20 media companies that he thinks have "unique" content.

Dealers hope he will continue to add to his holding. Some believe he has moved in knowing that a corporate deal involving EMI is just around the corner.

Germany's Bertelsmann stoked the takeover flames by revealing it is in talks with "all parties" on a possible joint venture with its music...
