Oct. 23--Somewhere in this fragrant barn, a radio is playing. The faint sound of country music washes over Fling, Kool-Aid and 203 other Holstein cows, who shuffle restlessly in the yellow glow of barn lights, all puffs of warm breath and shifting forms of black and white.

Somewhere out in the chilly darkness, north of Manheim, Steve and Brenda Hershey are walking the familiar path from farmhouse to barn that generations of their family have walked every day for the past 127 years. Shortly after they arrive at the barn at 4 a.m., Mrs. Hershey is calling out to the herd.

"Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!"

The day has begun.
