Bank of America Takeover Will Mean Some Fleet Job Losses.

Oct. 28--In the aftermath of Bank of America Corp.'s $47 billion deal to take over FleetBoston Financial Corp., several things became clearer yesterday: There will be job losses at New England's largest bank, although the banks insist the total employment level shouldn't change much; the companies say they will work hard not to repeat mistakes from previous bungled takeovers; and several key Fleet executives will get plum jobs in the newer, bigger entity.

The deal is one of superlatives: Valued at $47 billion, it is the biggest takeover in Boston history and the 15th-largest ever in corporate America. The combined bank will have 5,700 branches, nearly twice as many as nearest rival Wells...
