Yale Paper Examines True Economic Costs of Wildfires.

Oct. 30--The true costs of wildfires such as the one ravaging Southern California are invariably underestimated, making it harder for decision-makers to prevent or better manage future fires, according to a study from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

"Assessing the Environmental, Social and Economic Impacts of Wildfire" looked closely at 10 wildfires from New Jersey to Oregon between 2000 and 2002 to see what costs were taken into consideration.

Federal agencies typically assessed the number of fires in a year, total acres burned, structures destroyed and the cost of putting the fires out.
