Coal Fuels Sales Volume for Tulsa, Okla.-Based Alliance Resource Partners.

Nov. 2--TULSA, Okla.--Rising natural-gas and oil prices have led consumers to look for alternative fuels, but the trend has also driven them back to more traditional options.

The resurgence in the popularity of coal in recent years has helped Tulsa-based Alliance Resource Partners reach the Oklahoma Inc. top 10 for the second consecutive year, climbing five more spots to No. 4.

Coal lost some of its followers in the 1990s as natural gas was seen as the environmentally friendly fuel of the future.

As gas prices have climbed over the past two years, however, the country has been more willing to burn the cheaper -- though dirtier -- coal.
