Boeing Announces First Layoffs in Pueblo, Colo.

Nov. 4--Delayed but not unexpected, the first layoff notices went out Monday to 24 Boeing employees in Pueblo, the first jobs to be cut as the 15-year-old rocket factory prepares to be shut down sometime early next year.

Plant Manager Fred Hernandez said that the 24 workers, drawn from all areas of the plant, were given 60-day notices. When they leave at the end of the year, the work force will stand at 186 people, he said.

The plant, used to build the Delta rockets that put the global positioning satellite system in orbit along with numerous military, commercial and scientific projects, will be shut down by the end of the first quarter of 2004, Hernandez...
