Atlantis, Fla., Hospital Installs Robotic Surgery Device.

Nov. 12--ATLANTIS, Fla.--When Rick Mayer went to JFK Medical Center last month to have his prostate removed, he was a little disconcerted to see his doctor seated at a console a few feet away from the operating table.

Mayer's surgery was the hospital's second procedure using the da Vinci robotic surgery system, which lets the doctor remove the prostate by making five tiny holes in the pelvis instead of a long abdominal incision.

With the robot the hospital staff affectionately calls "Dexter," a doctor sits at a computerized console with a screen and moves wrists and fingers to manipulate robotic claws located above a patient lying on a table several feet...
