Loews Corp. Says Newport Cigarette Investments Decreased Third-Quarter Profit.

Nov. 13--Loews Corp. said yesterday that third-quarter profit decreased 39 percent for its Carolina Group tracking stock because of investment losses and increased promotional spending on its Newport menthol cigarette brand.
Carolina Group reflects the business performance of Loews' Lorillard Inc. subsidiary, which is based in Greensboro, and makes Newport. Loews, a conglomerate based in New York, has a 77 percent interest in the earnings of Carolina Group. The public holds the rest.
Shares of Carolina Group closed 88 cents lower at $23.88, on a day when the overall stock market rallied.
