Telecom Companies Cut Workers from Jobs Likely to Be Filled by Outsourcing.

Nov. 20--The steady parade of workers out the door of the nation's leading telecom companies shows no signs of abating, leaving jobs that are likely to be filled by automated services or overseas workers.
"It's an industry that's suffering, and they need to cut as much of their cost structure as they can," said Patrick Comack, a telecom analyst at Guzman & Co. in Miami.
AT&T Wireless, which cut 800 jobs from its work force in the most recent quarter, is reported to be considering a plan to replace more than 3,000 workers in customer service and technology support with overseas contractors in India at lower wages. Commenting on a Wall Street Journal report,...
