Florida Attorney General Asks Regulators to Kill Phone-Rate Hike.

Nov. 18--TALLAHASSEE, Fla.--State Attorney General Charlie Crist asked state regulators Monday to dismiss the largest proposed phone rate increase in Florida history because phone companies have failed to show if consumers will get any benefit.

Crist's petition says that a new law requires companies to tell consumers how much they'll save on in-state long distance calls if the companies raise local phone rates by a cumulative $350 million.

The phone companies, which drafted the law in question, sold it to legislators as a way to increase competition and lower costs for consumers.
