Dec. 4--IT'S TOUGH OUT THERE BUT SATCHELL SHOWS WHAT FRIENDS ARE MADE: IT is a tough time to be a life assurance salesman. The industry has been devastated by the bear markets. Public confidence has been dented by mis-selling scandals, and debt-happy consumers have lost the savings habit.
It is making life hard for Keith Satchell, the chief executive of Friends Provident.
He is often gently mocked for allegedly looking and acting like a geography teacher. That is a little unfair -- but he has managed to map a course for Friends through one of the worst periods the UK insurance industry has endured.
